Why top dress my lawn?

Why top dress a lawn?

The majority of people top dress their lawns to remove annoying dips that occur in their lawns. Top dressing is usually a mixture of sand and loam, but sometimes an organic material is also added to provide a longer tern benefit to the lawn. It is usually a sterilised, weed free material that will be integrated within your existing soil structure.

There are, however, many benefits of applying a Top Dressing to your lawn. Not only does it smooth the surface of your lawn but also;

Will help improve the substructure of your lawn

Will help to improve drainage

Helps to protect your lawn over the winter period

Helps to dilute thatch

Promotes deeper root growth

Promotes finer grasses and rootzone development

Why top dress a lawn?
The most common reasons for Top Dressing a lawn is to minimise dips or improve drainage. The benefits, however, are many as indicated above. It is important to plan applying a Top Dressing. Usually, one plans to apply following a hollow tining or coring activity, when the top dressing not only covers the lawn but is ‘swept’ into the holes created to improve the drainage and compactation of your lawn. Where drainage is a major problem top dressing of your lawn may need to be carried out on three or four occasions before the improvements can be said successful.

When to Top Dress?
Top Dressing must be applied while the grass continues to grow. Due to climate change, in the South that means almost any time of the year! Early Autumn or Spring are the best times to apply a top dressing if to improve drainage. If you are applying a top dressing to minimise dips in your lawn any time is the right time, again whilst the grass is growing. By applying a little after each time your lawn is cut most dips will be smooth by the end of the season!

How much to apply?
No matter when you apply top dressing the vital point is not to smother the grasses. Always leave at least 50% of the grass blade showing above top dressing. That way the grass will continue to grow strong and benefit from the dressing. Should you smother your grasses they will continue to grow, but, grow much weaker and be susceptible to diseases. Of course we all know grass is extraordinarily strong and will recover no matter what happens to it. The problem is the type of grasses that grow back are not always the mixture of grasses that were originally grown in your lawn!
